“I believe being able to know what to expect in college was key to my successes this year. I learned what to expect from UCI through summer bridge.”
“The experience of it all was extremely helpful and I’m super grateful for summer bridge, because my first year would have been completely different. Summer bridge made me feel comfortable at UCI.”
“The most valuable thing was having a support system that I knew I could always come to when I need help with anything. Janet and the SSI staff were always more than willing to help me and I can never thank them enough for their unending support.”
“I think that meeting people really helped me because I had developed a support group for when times were getting rough with school or with other friends. Summer Bridge got me adjusted to living away from home and living in the dorms. Because of summer bridge, I have meet some of the best people in my life right now and I am so thankful for that.”
“I think taking classes over the Summer was the most useful experience. I adjusted to large class sizes, got an idea of the workload I could expect, and became comfortable using online learning environments. In addition, I learned the logistics of everyday college life.”
“I think the program does a great job at reminding Summer bridgers that help/ resources are available if needed. The PG meetings were very helpful to me personally because I was able to address any issues I was struggling with which ultimately led me to get help/resources before the situation escalated.”
2020-2021 Student Testimonials
Don’t be afraid to really open up about any doubts you have, and don’t be scared if you’re doubting everything (your major, career path, etc) You have a lot of time to figure it out, and you have a space of comfort with people to help you!
Coming into UCI in a virtual setting, I was nervous about the transition from high school to college and wanted to establish study skills that worked the best for me. Summer Bridge has supported me with resources and workshops that taught me various study techniques that I was able to test out during the summer before the school year. I was able to learn how to interact with faculty through Summer Bridge which really helped me gain confidence in taking control of my academics.
My Summer Bridge community really supported me through my first year at UCI. Kathy and all the other mentors have really showed me that I am not alone in college; there is always someone who can help me about really anything, whether it be about academics, personal interest, whatever.
My main goals were to be able to establish myself as a UCI student, to find myself meaningful friends and to prepare myself for a future job. Summer Bridge, especially when everything has been done online, has helped me meet people I can really call my friends, even when I hardly know anyone in my actual classes. It’s been not just a source of stability and comfort throughout my freshman year, but also a source of motivation to push myself a little further.
The program reminded me there are always help/resources available if I needed. Knowing that there is a support system I knew I could come to when I need help with anything made me feel positive. Kathy and her staff were always more than willing to help me and I am very forever grateful. I am still shocked to see the support system UCI provides for students like me.
I would tell future Summer Bridgers to take advantage of new opportunities by reaching out to other bridgers during socials and other activities, and just putting yourself out there because you never know, you might make new, long-lasting friendships like how I did!
